Train a child in the way he should go,

and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

- Proverbs 22:6 NKJ

Parents are Commanded

to Train Children

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  • Proverbs 1:8-9 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.
  • Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
  • Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
  • Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

Parents are Commanded to Discipline/Chastise Children

  • Proverbs 13:24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
  • Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
  • Proverbs 23:13-14 (KJV) Withhold not correction from the child.
  • Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
  • Proverbs 29:17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

Parents, discipline your children in love, but never in anger. If timeout works, great! But sometimes it may be necessary to apply the board of education to a child's seat of knowledge, so he or she may gain wisdom and understanding.

It is important to train up your child according to the wisdom of God, not the words of men. Remember, discipline applied properly is not abuse, but raising a child to lack self-disciple is very abusive.

Discipline may hurt for a short time, but it is immensely helpful for a lifetime. The father who loves his child disciplines his child, although punishment is never a joy, it brings forth the peaceable fruits of righteousness.

  • Hebrews 12:11(NKJ)  Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
  • Hebrews 13:1 (ESV)  For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
  • Hebrews 12:11 (Message Bible)  At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it’s the well-trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.

Dr. Ivan Joseph: Help Your Child Develop Strong Confidence

Children Have Wonderfully Different Personalities

One of the greatest gifts that you can give to your child is a strong sense of worth, value and confidence. This will help him or her throughout life in every area.

God gives each child unique gifts, talents and strengths. Train each child in the unique way he or she should go. God equips. Parents must train.

The Story of Sam Berns

Watch the following two videos (left to right), then watch them with your child. Discuss the challenges that some people face, and yet overcome. Let your child know that life is filled with hurdles. This is why it is important for them to maintain a positive attitude that radiates, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." Assure them that life is easiest for those who learn to jump over life's hurdles well. Life is conquered by how well one hurdles, not by wasting time hoping or looking for a life without hurdles.

Highlight Sam's amazing accomplishments and his joy that were possible because of his great attitude. Sam is an awesome example of the joy and happiness that is possible in spite of undesired circumstances in life. If life gives you a voice and nothing else, become a public speaker. If life gives you lemons, open a lemonade stand. No matter the limitation, it only limits you if you allow it to stop you.

College: A Wise Person Counts the Cost, FIRST

Why College Is So Expensive In America

Parents, not the secular school system, must train their children in the way they should go.

Parents must train their children if they want their children to know God

and be capable of critical thinking.
